Smackdown Results An atmosphere of nervous uncertainty enveloped SmackDown! as the Tacoma, Wash., crowd waited to see how WCW would react to having its championship match interrupted by Stone Cold Steve Austin and Kurt Angle earlier in the week during RAW IS WAR.
So intense were things at the arena that referees and not superstars were the first to argue. Federation ref Earl Hebner and WCW official Nick Patrick were pulled apart after bickering about sharing space in the locker room!
Later in the evening, Billy Kidman challenged Gregory Helms for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship. Helms appeared to take control of the match after dodging Kidman's shooting star press and hitting his signature "Nightmare on Helms Street". But Kidman kicked out and managed to reverse Helms' Vertebreaker and slam his opponent face first into the mat to take a three count and walk away as the new Cruiserweight Champion!
Cameras later showed Federation Superstars - led by the APA - mocking Booker T as the WCW Champion entered the arena. Booker T shrugged off the beating he received on RAW, commenting that he would successfully defend his championship that evening.
Diamond Dallas Page was spotted backstage later on being wished good luck in his match against Booker T by a WCW referee. DDP brashly said he didn't need luck, then asked if the ref had seen Undertaker or Sara that night, which the referee denied. A crazed look came over DDP as he stated his Diamond Cutter was sharper than ever, and he couldn't wait to slice of Taker's head with it!
Scott Hudson and Arn Anderson arrived at the announce table to call the action between DDP and Booker T in their WCW Championship match. DDP took charge over the champ by hitting him with a DDT onto a steel chair in the ring! Booker T kicked out after a two count, but DDP came back with the chair and readied to hit the champ...when Undertaker raced into the ring! Booker T rolled up the startled challenger and earned the pin fall to retain his championship!
While the match was over, the real action was just starting. Taker chased DDP outside the arena while Kurt Angle suddenly sprinted into the ring and assaulted Booker T! But the WCW Champion recovered and cut into Angle with a scissor-kick that ended Angle's attack.
Outside the stadium, DDP lured Undertaker into an ambush of waiting WCW Superstars, including Kanyon, Mike Awesome, Chavo Guerrero, Shawn Stasiak and Lance Storm. These WCW standouts beat the Dead Man into submission, even tossing him like dirty laundry into a steel garage door! WCW Chairman Shane McMahon arrived and tried to stop the beating, but DDP smacked Shane and threw him into a door. Booker T ran to Shane's aid, but also felt the wrath of the WCW Superstars. SmackDown closed with Anderson and Hudson searching for an answer to why Shane's employees turned against the chairman.
